Bad news for the world of cinema, and specifically, for Star Trek fans. Kenneth Mitchell has died at age 49 after a five-year battle with ALS. The actor, known for his roles in Star Trek: Discovery and Captain Marvel, died this Saturday, according to a statement from his family shared on X (previously called Twitter). His departure leaves a deep void in the film industry.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son and dear friend,” the statement read. “Ken was widely known as an actor in many films and television shows. He has played an Olympic hopeful, an apocalypse survivor, an astronaut, the father of a superhero and four unique Star Trekkers,” it continued.
Born on November 24, 1974 in Toronto (Canada), the actor was the father of two children, Lilah and Kallum, the result of his relationship with his wife Susan. “Ken was diligent and hardworking in everything he did, but as a father these traits found their fullest expression. He was extremely dedicated to being a positive and fun force in his children’s lives. Regardless of his later disabilities, Ken discovered a higher calling to be more himself for his children. Ken will always be proud of who his children have become,” the letter read.
It was in 2018 when doctors diagnosed him with the disease, which affects around 5 out of every 100,000 people worldwide, according to Medline Plus. The actor began using a wheelchair the following year, and shared the diagnosis in a statement issued through People. “For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of terrible challenges due to ALS. And in true Ken style, he managed to overcome each one with grace and commitment to live a full and happy life every moment,” says his family in the statement.
“Ken will be forever grateful for the enormous amount of love and endless support he received from his community throughout this journey. Especially the courage, resilience and strength shown by his extraordinary wife, family and friends,” he continued. The family describes the actor as “a keeper of countless lasting friendships. Like a massive star exploding with kindness, purity and a particular kind of silliness, you were swept right into his orbit.”
“Once captured, Kenny could bathe you in positivity, compassion, thoughtfulness and hilarity, and make you feel very loved,” they expressed. His family also praised him as “a giver, a listener, a sentimentalist and an excellent observer of his surroundings.” There are many recognized faces who wanted to show the affection they felt for the actor. On the other hand, the world of Star Trek also paid tribute to him. “The entire Star Trek family sends its condolences to Mitchell’s family, friends, loved ones and fans around the world,” he said.
Mitchell also starred in other projects throughout his career, including productions such as Frequency, El Milagro, Ghost Whisperer and NCIS: Los Angeles, among many others. Her loss is a great blow to all those who knew her and admired her good work in front of the cameras.
