One of the accessories that, in recent months, has gone viral on TikTok is the silk pillowcase. Cindy Crawford, Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham are some of the celebrities who have recommended their followers to use this fabric to show off silky hair and a dazzling face.
“One of the best tricks I have learned is to sleep on a silk pillowcase. It prevents the skin and hair from losing moisture,” the British designer said in an interview. A recommendation that many users have followed, who have filled the social network with publications where they talk about the benefits of this bed accessory.
In these videos, many claim that their hair has experienced a remarkable change, as well as the skin on the face, with fewer wrinkles and more hydration. Some statements that La Vanguardia contrasts with Dr. Andrea Combalia, of the Catalan Society of Dermatology, of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia.
“Dermatologists recommend using cotton or silk covers because they are fabrics that absorb moisture and allow perspiration. They are the most suitable fabrics to be in contact with the skin, it is very important that we use breathable fabrics,” says the dermatologist, who He adds that white, undyed covers should be used.
Dr. Combalia explains that using a silk cover has benefits for the hair, since it does not damage the hair cuticle, helps make it softer and shinier and prevents the dreaded tangles and frizz. “Silk is a soft fabric that means there is no friction on the hair, it is much better than cotton,” she says.
This fabric is a natural fiber made up of proteins and amino acids. The sericin protein stands out, a component that acts as a projecting barrier for facial skin and hair. In addition, it does not absorb moisture from the hair or skin, which helps products applied at night work more effectively.
Another important detail to keep in mind is that this fabric absorbs fewer fatty elements, so the hair will last longer clean because sebum production is reduced and impurities on the face will be minimized. “Pillowcases are in constant direct contact with the skin. This means that they accumulate dead cells, remains of makeup products, sweat, saliva… That is why it is important to wash them frequently. I recommend at least once a week. To taking care of your hair and skin, in addition to a good beauty routine based on removing makeup and cleaning your face well, you should use fabrics such as silk or cotton,” says the dermatologist, who also recommends worrying about the fabrics that come into contact. with the skin, as is the case with pajamas.
Dr. Combalia does highlight the benefits that silk pillowcases have for hair, but regarding facial skin she indicates that it is as advisable to use this fabric as cotton. “They are two fabrics that do not clog the pore and help minimize the accumulation of dirt. But for those people who want to prevent what are known as sleep wrinkles, we recommend that they sleep on their back,” she says.
