A group of teenagers on bicycles were caught on video violently attacking a man in his car in downtown Los Angeles. The victim, Shailoobek Bazarbai Uulu, was at a red light when he was surrounded by roughly 30 teens on bikes. As he tried to pass them, one of the teens threw a water bottle into his car, prompting him to pull over. The situation quickly escalated as the teens began assaulting Uulu, breaking windows, jumping on the hood of his car, and stealing his wallet, cash, and personal documents. Unfortunately, Uulu also suffered a broken leg and multiple lacerations in the attack.
Uulu, who is originally from Kyrgyzstan and sought asylum in the U.S. a year ago, expressed shock at the cruelty of the teens’ actions. He mentioned that he didn’t expect such violence and didn’t realize the danger of getting out of his car in that situation. The attack resulted in the theft of important documents needed for his asylum process.
Despite the presence of bystanders filming the incident, it took some time for people to intervene and help Uulu to safety. He pleaded with them to call the police as the violent assault unfolded. The lack of immediate arrests in the case and the attempted use of his stolen bank cards added to Uulu’s distress and frustration.
The incident sheds light on the growing concerns of violent crime in Los Angeles, as demonstrated by the criticism faced by Mayor Karen Bass for not effectively addressing the issue. The attack also raises questions about the safety and security of the city, especially with the upcoming 2028 summer Olympic games set to take place in LA.
