2023 is being a defining year in the life of the singer Shakira. Although it was in 2022 when she put an end to her relationship with former soccer player Gerard Piqué, the one from Barranquilla has found the stability she needs in recent months.
After a difficult time in which the president of the Kings League confirmed his romance with a young Catalan woman named Clara Chía, Shakira and Piqué were able to reach an agreement with the custody of their children. At the beginning of April, coinciding with the Easter holidays, Mebarak left Barcelona with Milan and Sasha to start a new life in Miami, United States.
The main reason that led the artist to make this decision was media pressure. Both she and her ex (and her children) had been suffering strong persecution from the media for months, something that she tried to stop by putting herself in the way.
Although the relationship with Piqué continued to be tense, the interpreter of Loba, Las de la intuition, Hips don’t lie and Monotonía reached an agreement with him in which it was established that she had the right to see the children a few days a month ( The former F. C. Barcelona player had to go visit them in Miami), as well as giving him a part of the children’s vacations.
A few hours ago, Billboard published an interview with Shakira in which she opens up and appears vulnerable by acknowledging that she is still in a reflection phase and that it has taken her a long time to recover from the hard blow of the breakup.
When the journalist asked her if the children were happy in their new American school, the singer did not hesitate and explained that they are delighted and that in Miami they do not have the pressure of ”being children of…”, just as they do not suffer media harassment: ”(…) In Barcelona we had paparazzi at our door every day. “Here are normal kids enjoying normality, which is what school should be: a safe haven where they can be themselves.” In addition, Bizarrap’s friend explained that her little ones are quite sociable and that they adapted without any problem.
The artist shared in the same interview that she always believed in “happily ever after,” but that things did not go as expected and that she had to look forward. According to the singer, her move to Miami has only brought her joy, since she now has endless tools and collaborators with which to attend to her musical career.
Furthermore, she explained that having to ‘share’ her children has made her dedicate herself entirely to their care when they are with her: ‘If I can only have them half the time, I will make the most of my half.’
