A subtle but unexpected change takes place in Rosalía’s closet. Little is said about her latest outfits, different from those that the artist has used to her fans, to go on stage. The Motomami aesthetic, pleated mini skirts, leather bodies and jackets, give way to a classic and romantic piece that dates back to the 17th century: the gingham print dress.

The artist, who traveled to Argentina in March and to Mexico at the beginning of April to perform at the AX Ceremony festival, has already worn a Gingham print dress on two occasions, the first in light blue and the second in red, signed by Acné Studio and combined with long black leather gloves.

This print characterized by its small two-tone squares -usually with the presence of white and combined with a pastel tone- comes from the French town of La Provence Vichy and was used in the beginning for tablecloths and napkins. But in 1946, the place used it to dye the shirts of the farmers and little by little it was gaining ground in the closets of the French.

The culmination of this print as a trend came from the hand of the couturier Jacques Esterel, who designed Brigitte Bardott’s wedding dress and established this print on the streets, far from the lavender fields. The aesthetic to which Vichy paintings are related is undoubtedly romantic, classic and country. Nothing to do with the aesthetic that Rosalía has championed since the release of her third studio album, Motomami.

However, the author of hits like Motomami or Con Altura, is known for her talent for mixing trends, aesthetics, and of course musical genres to create concepts never seen or heard before. Thus, just as she did with the biker style, converted in her closet into a symbol of feminist empowerment, the singer could be creating a new aesthetic with her latest outfits on stage.

In Mexico, Rosalía has reinvented the romanticism of the popular checked piece by giving it a radical contrast with body gloves and in Argentina she combined it with thick black stockings and very punk makeup. Is it the beginning of a gothic lady style? We will have to wait for her own staging to corroborate it.
