Police Investigate Reports of Drugged Drinks and Sexual Assault at University of New Hampshire

An investigation was launched on Monday following reports of two individuals having their drinks drugged by the same person at the University of New Hampshire, according to university police. The first incident occurred on Thursday evening, with the second incident taking place between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

Victims came forward on Monday and identified the same individual as the perpetrator in both drugging incidents. While details about the Thursday incident were not provided, police disclosed that the Friday night incident occurred inside the suspect’s residence hall on the University of New Hampshire’s Durham Campus. The victim and suspect were acquainted, and the victim reported being sexually assaulted.

The University of New Hampshire Police Department and school administrators are currently investigating both incidents. “Survivors are never responsible for the offenders’ behavior,” police emphasized. The Durham Campus of the University of New Hampshire has an enrollment of over 15,000 students, according to the university’s website.

Safety Measures and Community Response

As the police investigation proceeds, safety tips have been shared with the campus community, urging students to be vigilant of individuals pressuring them or others to consume alcohol or drugs. Campus officials have reminded students to utilize safety escorts provided by university police by calling 603-862-1212 if they feel unsafe on campus.

“Trust your instincts,” police advised. “If you feel uneasy or sense something is wrong, take action to remove yourself from the situation or call 911 for assistance.” Students have received alerts from university police via text and email, prompting reactions from the community.

Aryonna Gervais expressed surprise at the situation, noting that students often feel sheltered within their campus environment. Emma Bousquet acknowledged the importance of being more mindful of personal safety following receiving the alerts. Rachael MacDonald highlighted the persistent concern among female students regarding safety when socializing. Dan Kszystyniak condemned the reported incidents and expressed hope for accountability and consequences for the perpetrator.

Support and Awareness

In response to the incidents, the University of New Hampshire has emphasized the importance of supporting survivors and fostering awareness of sexual assault prevention on campus. Resources such as counseling services and advocacy groups are readily available to assist victims and promote a culture of respect and safety within the university community.

University officials have encouraged students to participate in educational programs and workshops focused on consent, bystander intervention, and healthy relationships. By empowering students with knowledge and skills to recognize and prevent sexual violence, the university aims to create a campus environment where all individuals feel secure and respected.

In light of recent events, students have organized discussions and initiatives to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault and the importance of supporting survivors. Collaborative efforts between students, faculty, and administration are underway to strengthen prevention strategies and enhance support services for those impacted by sexual violence.

The University of New Hampshire remains committed to fostering a campus culture that prioritizes safety, respect, and accountability. By engaging in ongoing dialogue and collaboration, the university community aims to prevent future incidents of sexual assault and promote a campus environment where all individuals thrive and feel valued.
