Interactivity in the media has always been an objective that has been tried to be achieved in different ways, be it through messages, surveys or the classic live calls. In advance production products, such as movies, series or documentaries, it is more complicated. Even so, there are examples of this. Netflix dared in 2018 with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and now they try the same luck again in a diametrically opposite genre.
The North American streaming platform has announced the premiere of I Choose Love, a romantic comedy directed by Stuart McDonald and written by Josann McGibbon, which can be seen starting on August 31. However, this is not the typical love story with a protagonist and several possible suitors. On this occasion, the viewer will have control of the main character’s life and will be able to decide which boy he stays with.
I Choose Love” revolves around Cami, a sound engineer who seems to have it all: a dream job, a steady boyfriend, and a bright future. But things have turned out a little differently than she had planned. While her life is reconsidered, Cami’s destiny depends entirely on you: from choosing a new professional path to rethinking your relationships, ”the Netflix platform details in a press release, in addition to already having its own page.
“The formal boyfriend, the boy she let get away, the charismatic rock star… who will Cami choose? In this interactive romantic comedy, the choice is yours,” reads the official Netflix synopsis on the web. The film will have four prominent characters, three options for the protagonist that viewers must shuffle through key scenes and specific questions. A format similar to that of Bandersnatch that is repeated in a movie about love.
There will be multiple moments where the people behind the screen get a chance to decide Cami’s fate, from truth or dare games to scenes where you can decide whether or not to kiss the guy the engineer is with. A format that provides different viewing possibilities, as if it were a video game in which there are different endings. In this way, each one can see what happens if she chooses another boy.
The cast is led by Laura Marano, co-star of the series Austin and Ally on Disney Channel, playing Cami. Along with her, Scott Michael Foster will play the role of Paul, the engineer’s current partner. Avan Jogia will play Rex Galier, a British rock star; while Jordi Webber will take care of capturing Jack Menna, who was Cami’s first love. The cast of characters is completed by her sister, played by Megan Smart.
