How delusional we were as spectators. The content platforms arrived with the promise of making all their titles available to the consumer and for all eternity. But, after discovering that making a profit in the streaming market is difficult and that its services only accumulate losses, some are going into savings mode. And, as Disney had announced, now it is their turn: they have begun to withdraw original series and movies that were theoretically untouchable in a global maneuver.
To understand the scope of the massacre, which will take place on May 26, Willow’s television sequel will disappear from the Disney catalog. The screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan, despite the cancellation after one season, did not rule out that this fantastic universe derived from the 1988 Ron Howard film could be recovered later. With its liquidation, Disney highlights the importance of this intellectual property within of the company structure.
It is not the only one, since the study shows little affection for the original Disney production that is not framed in the Marvel or Star Wars universes. And it is that the sports Big Shot and We are the best: a new era have vanished like Diary of a future president, The mysterious society Benedict, The world according to Jeff Goldblum, Partners and hounds or the film Rosaline, a free adaptation of Romeo and Juliet which received critical acclaim.
There are also no series derived from the FX channel or the Hulu platform, both owned by Disney, such as Pistol, Maggie, Y: The last man, La niña del demonio, Dollface or The hot zone. This massacre of titles aims to reduce costs and, taking into account the little traction they supposedly have among subscribers, save royalties. If they will try to place them on channels or platforms to get performance out of them, as HBO Max did with its European production or Westworld, it remains to be seen.
