The murder case of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta continues to shock Spanish society as the weeks go by. The accused of the crime, the Spanish chef Daniel Sancho, has been locked up since August 7 in a Thai prison, awaiting a trial that would be scheduled for the end of the year, and in which a possible death sentence awaits him. During this period of time, the reactions continue to occur.
One of the most recent has been that of Antonio del Castillo, Marta’s father, who was murdered in 2009 and whose remains have not yet been found today. The father sent a message to his social networks after some statements by Luis Romero, the legal representative of Edwin Arrieta in Spain; who used the multiple versions given to the authorities by Miguel Carcaño, Marta’s confessed murderer, to compare both situations.
“From my point of view, the two cases have in common the multiple versions that have been given as to how the events unfolded,” said the lawyer, indicating that Carcaño came to count up to seven different versions of what happened. “First he said it was an accident, then he believed she was dead, then he killed her, then it was considered that there had been a rape…”, added the lawyer during his speech in Espejo Público.
“Now, Daniel Sancho has also given several versions. He first said that there was an attack by Edwin Arrieta; then he said that he hit the sink; later, that he hit the bathtub again; and now it seems that he has admitted that he stabbed him”, Romero contributed, adding that his latest version coincides with Arrieta’s autopsy: the victim would have hit himself before Sancho slit his throat, when he did not know if he was still alive or if he was already dead.
Given the comparison, Antonio del Castillo published a message in X, referring to the imprisonment of Carcaño, who is serving a sentence of more than 21 years and three months for the murder of Marta: “Daniel Sancho has committed a crime in a sovereign country with its laws, and the televisions are dedicated to criticizing the prisons of that country. Surely we Spaniards would like more a more punitive prison and not prisons with all the comforts, including swimming pools”.
Many users have shown their support for the father’s words. “I am obsessed with how he lives, what he eats, how he sleeps: he has dismembered a person. The actions of the media are deplorable”, read one of the replies. “I hope they don’t bring him here, he won’t have the comforts of the prisons here and there and poor boy who will have a hard time,” expressed another response.
