María Sánchez, the media "grandmother of Andalusia", dies at 110

Old age, being the last stage of human life, can still lead to many moments and events. A good diet, combined with healthy exercise habits and a positive mental framework, can last much longer than one might expect. Often, seniority also means living in a constant lottery, not knowing what will affect you. Therefore, we must not only respect the elderly, but also care for them and love them.

They have done this for many years in the Granada town of La Zubia, where this Wednesday they said goodbye to one of its most illustrious inhabitants. María Sánchez, better known as “The Grandmother of Andalusia”, has died at 110 years of age, being until now the oldest woman in the autonomous community. Her funeral was held this morning at the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church, culminating a sad day in the town.

Sánchez, born in October 1913, had two children, a granddaughter and two great-granddaughters, and had become an iconic figure not only for La Zubia or the province of Granada, but also the entire territory. Jacob Yáñez, Councilor for the Elderly, lamented the loss: “We feel very sad, as well as grateful to have known her, to have shared such happy moments with her and to have been exceptional witnesses of such a full, endearing, vital life. and full of experiences and wisdom.”

“She has been an example of vitality, joy and strength until her last days, and a very beloved neighbor in our municipality, who we will miss greatly,” said Puri López, mayor of La Zubia. In this way, one of the oldest citizens of the territory says goodbye, a list occupied by a lucky few who have managed to stay healthy and strong for more than a century.

The oldest of all, who is also the oldest in the world, is the Catalan Maria Branyas. Born in the American city of San Francisco, she currently lives in the Santa Maria del Tura residence in Olot, in the province of Girona. She came into the world on March 4, 1907, and over the next three months she is on track to turn the mammoth figure of 117 years. To get this far in life, her routines and tricks are the biggest keys.

Having survived covid, the civil war, an earthquake and a fire, he always maintains a calm day: without dieting but eating small amounts, away from toxic personalities, a calm environment and one natural yogurt a day. This last element is essential, since its regular consumption greatly benefits gastrointestinal health.
