A man from Framingham is set to appear in court on Friday for allegedly shooting a man at a pro-Israel protest in Newton. Scott Hayes, 47, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and violation of a constitutional right causing injury, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan. The incident occurred near the intersection of Washington Street and Harvard Street on Thursday evening.

According to Ryan, a group of pro-Israel protesters had gathered in the area when they got into a confrontation with a man on the other side of the street. The man allegedly stepped into the road multiple times and, after exchanging words, rapidly crossed the street and tackled Hayes, who was part of the pro-Israel group. A scuffle ensued, and Hayes shot the man. Ryan mentioned that Hayes legally possessed the gun used in the incident.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. As of Friday morning, there was no update on his condition. The shooting prompted a significant police response and raised concerns within the Newton community.

Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, along with Ryan and Newton Acting Police Chief George McMains, emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages. McMains urged anyone with video footage of the incident to share it with investigators. Fuller urged community members to remain calm and allow the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) New England expressed concern about the incident and emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation. ADL stated that protests should not lead to violence and called for a thorough examination of the entire incident by law enforcement.

US Representative Jake Auchincloss, who previously served as a Newton city councilor, condemned the violence and expressed appreciation for the swift response by law enforcement and emergency medical services. He called for a thorough investigation by Newton police and District Attorney Ryan.

A GoFundMe campaign in support of Hayes had raised over $63,000 by Friday morning. Supporters of Hayes gathered outside Newton District Court ahead of his arraignment, with several supporters present in the courtroom during the proceedings.
