The death of Miguel Barroso at the age of 70 has surprised many. The one who was Secretary of State for Communication in the first Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero died last Saturday afternoon due to a sudden heart attack, in the same way as his wife until 2016, Carme Chacón.
A loss that leaves his 15-year-old son Miquel orphaned, and that has had numerous reactions on the political scene. “Criterion and commitment, intelligence and kindness. Vital elegance and always the right word at the right time. This is how we will remember Miguel Barroso,” Pedro Sánchez published on his X (Twitter) account.
And, as it could not be otherwise, the current President of the Government did not miss the farewell to Miguel Barroso held last Sunday. Sánchez went to the San Isidro funeral home in Madrid, along with his wife Begoña Gómez, to say goodbye to one of the people who has done the most for his political career.
But he is not the only important personality who wanted to come and say goodbye to the member of the Board of Directors of Grupo PRISA. The former president of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, also approached the funeral chapel. And Miguel Barroso has been closely linked to the politician since they worked side by side in 2004 and 2005.
Among the long list of members of the executive and politicians, there was also Félix Bolaños, Minister of Justice, Presidency and Relations with the Courts; Isabel Rodríguez, Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda; Santos Cerdán, Secretary of Organization of the PSOE; o Pilar Alegría, Government Spokesperson and Minister of Education.
But journalists, such as Pedro J. Ramírez, José Miguel Contreras and Aimar Bretos, also wanted to attend the farewell; businessmen, such as the president of Telefónica, José María Álvarez Pallete; or actors, like Roberto Álvarez, from Ana and the Seven.
Among those who wanted to say goodbye to Barroso was his brother Mariano Barroso, a film director, who did not hesitate to go to the funeral home. But the one who has been especially hurt these days by what happened has been his ex-wife, Charo Izquierdo. The journalist, and mother of her two daughters, wanted to send a last farewell message to her ex-husband through social networks.
“With whom I loved so much; With whom I dreamed so much; With whom I laughed so much; With whom I cried so much; For whom I sang so much,” he began to relate, along with a photograph in which they appear at the wedding of one of his daughters. “We have many memories left. Many voices. Many of those lives that you lived to the fullest. Many of those that you encouraged us to live for those you loved and who loved you,” she added.
