The Washington Examiner reported that Harris and her husband made donations to Legal Aid DC in the same year that Washington, D.C. Mayor declared a state of emergency due to youth crime. The city experienced a surge in juvenile arrests for violent crimes, prompting concerns about public safety.
Despite a decline in homicides in Washington in the year following the surge, crime rates remained high compared to previous years. Robberies and carjackings saw a significant increase in 2023, leading to calls for stricter enforcement measures to address the situation.
In addition to supporting Legal Aid DC, Harris has also backed other charitable organizations, including Howard University and the University of Southern California, as well as the Matthew Silverman Memorial Foundation. However, her involvement with far-left nonprofits like the Minnesota Freedom Fund has raised questions about the impact of her donations.
