A tragic incident involving a deadly DUI hit-and-run in New Mexico has left a 22-year-old victim dead, and the suspect, 21-year-old Jesus Sandoval-Martinez, is confirmed to have entered the U.S. illegally, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Sandoval-Martinez was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of the accident.

The collision, which occurred at an intersection in Albuquerque, involved Sandoval-Martinez’s Dodge pickup truck, a Tesla, and a Toyota Corolla. After the crash, witnesses reported that the suspect fled on foot and appeared to be intoxicated. He was eventually apprehended by bystanders at a Walgreens until law enforcement arrived.

Tragically, the driver of the Tesla, identified as Tiger Gutierrez, lost his life in the accident, while a passenger was hospitalized. The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries and received treatment. ICE placed an immigration detainer on Sandoval-Martinez following his arrest, as he was determined to be a Mexican national without a valid driver’s license or Social Security number.

This incident sheds light on the challenges and risks associated with illegal immigration, as more than 84,000 migrants crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization in June 2024 alone. Additionally, the number of “criminal noncitizens” attempting to enter the U.S. and being apprehended by Border Patrol agents has increased significantly in recent years.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case, as other instances of crimes committed by illegal migrants have been reported, including the rape and murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin by Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, and the involvement of Venezuelan migrants Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel and Franklin Jose Peña Ramos in the killing of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray in Houston.

These incidents highlight the importance of border security and immigration enforcement to prevent such tragic events from occurring. It is crucial for authorities to address the root causes of illegal immigration and take necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of communities across the country.
