How much does the Tax Agency take from the 'Pasapalabra' jackpot that Óscar Díaz just won?

This Wednesday, Pasapalabra experienced one of the highlights of its broadcasts throughout 2024. After an arduous competition that has spanned more than 150 programs, facing all kinds of issues, challenges, failures and other inconveniences, the contest presented by Roberto Leal has managed to find a winner of his gigantic Jackpot of 1,816,000 euros. Finally, Óscar Díaz was the winner.

The man from Madrid has managed to overcome the battle he had been fighting for weeks and months with his rival, Moisés Laguardia, by correctly answering a question about German architecture: “Last name of the architect who designed the Villa Wenhold, in the German city of Bremen.” After matching Emil Fahrenkamp, ??Óscar has been awarded nearly two million euros in prize money, which will be reduced by the intervention of the Treasury.

According to the Spanish Tax Agency’s regulations, prizes earned through television programs are considered capital gains. This means that they are charged a 19% tax which, in this case, the program itself withholds as taxes, before delivering the net prize to the winner. In the case of the 1,816,000 euros that he won as a prize, this translates into a total of 345,040 euros.

Likewise, at the time of filing the personal income tax return, the person contributing with a capital gain of this type must present the Pasapalabra prize as if it were a payroll income, similar to a high salary. This also implies paying the corresponding taxes in each community, which in the case of Madrid is 20%. This implies a quarter of the total prize that the Spanish treasury receives.

Regarding Óscar himself, his time on Pasapalabra was not new, after having participated in 2000 when Silvia Jato was its presenter. Six years later, he would accumulate 100 installments of Saber y Ganar: “It is not the most splendid program in terms of budget, but they make up for that with treatment and affection that you do not find in more industrial programs. I remember that when they eliminated me in 2006 it was like they took away a toy from me. “It was an almost childish reaction.”

On June 4, 2018, he returned to participate in the Rosco space thanks to a special edition, Pasapalabra en familia. There he appeared with his wife Patricia and his sister Lucía and would end up winning a total of 198,000 euros. He was later on, in the program Boom! by Juanra Bonet, where Óscar would become known as a member of Los Dispersos and would show his personality in more detail in front of the cameras. There he would add 324 programs and 1,546,400 accumulated euros.
