You have completely forgotten that that pot had been left outside the house or you have been surprised by a frost that you did not expect. The fact is that your plants have frozen and you don’t know what to do to bring them back to life. Some people underestimate their strength and throw in the towel in these circumstances, thinking that there is no way they can go back to being what they once were. Nothing is further from reality. Many times it is possible to save a frozen plant.
Identifying the symptoms of this phenomenon is easy. The leaves have taken on a blackish appearance, they are totally dehydrated and you can even see how they have been burned by the cold. Once the diagnosis of why the plant is not experiencing its best days is clear, it is time to act.
Plants that have suffered a frost have a solution, they can recover, but it will not be something miraculous. Not fast. The key is patience and acting by following a series of concrete steps. The first thing will be to reverse the effects of the cold, that is, warm it up and rehydrate its roots. Irrigation should be postponed until the plant has been able to recover the proper temperature for its roots, for which temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees are usually used. But it is better that the process is progressive and that it does not get direct sunlight.
When the roots are able to thaw after a few hours, it is time to rehydrate the plant. For this, it will be watered with warm water and it will not be done again until the substrate presents a dry appearance. To continue with this work of returning to the plant the humidity it needs to prosper, it will try to humidify the environment, for example, with the help of a sprayer. The best time to do it will be in the central hours of the day.
The last step of all is to power the plant. And this is precisely one of the keys in which mistakes are often made when they suffer from frost, since the first impulse is to get rid of all those most damaged parts so that the plant can heal and recover. But this is a big mistake that could kill her. The reason is that even those withered areas help protect the living parts of the plant.
So to prune it in that state would be going completely blind. The best thing for the plant will be to maintain proper care and wait until the arrival of spring to prune. At that time, it will begin its budding process and it will be possible to safely remove the leaves and stems that need to be discarded.
