In the middle of the summer it is common to find high levels of ultraviolet radiation. The sun is a source of vitamin D, however, prolonged exposure to the sun also causes adverse effects on our skin that can trigger irreversible damage to the body. For this reason, it is mandatory to apply sunscreen on both the face and the body. And our hair? Do you need to protect yourself from the sun? Hair sunscreens were born to preserve hair from sun damage and reduce, as far as possible, the deterioration caused by summer in the hair.
During the summer the manes suffer more than necessary. Chlorine from swimming pools, saltpeter from the sea, the sun… Hair sunscreens seek to safeguard the hair and keep it healthy against external factors that alter its hair fiber, such as the sun. This is how the experts at Eva Professional describe it: “The effects of ultraviolet rays on our hair are multiple and not exactly positive”.
Not in vain, the heat dehydrates and weakens the hair. If we also have dyed hair, it is possible that our dye appears more “yellowish” than normal. “Another effect of exposing the hair to UV radiation is that the bonds that unite the keratin fibers in the hair shaft are altered, decreasing the resistance of the hair fiber” they explain from Eva Professional. Thus, a hair sunscreen seeks to keep the weakening of the hair at bay, prevent its dryness and protect it from the damage of chlorine and saltpeter. In this way, it is capable of creating a kind of filter that prevents the sun’s rays from damaging the hair fiber or the hair structure.
Even if we use a hair sunscreen every day, we still often have to go to the hairdresser to give our hair a new life and make sure that we start September with healthy hair.
Although its use is recommended, it is also advisable to complement the care by applying a nourishing mask —at least once a week— and a conditioner whenever we wash our hair.
In addition to using sunscreen on your hair, wear a hat or cap that covers your hair. Not only will it help us protect our hair, but we will also prevent the sun from hitting our face directly. Avoid exposing your hair in the central hours of the day and, if your hair is long, it is advisable that you make a ponytail to wear it collected and protected (a large part) from the sun.
