Eurovision 2024 will have a historic change in its format. As detailed by the EBU, the organization will implement a new method to decide the order of performance of the artists in the final of the music festival.
This news comes after announcing that the Big Five countries and the host will perform live for the first time in the semifinals, thus promoting an important modification to the voting system.
Since 2013, the representatives qualified for the final participate in a draw that determines whether the performance will take place in the first or second half of the gala. In this way, the producers tried to create a very entertaining show on a television level.
This dynamic has changed from now on. The EBU has introduced a novelty for Malmö 2024: the producer’s choice. This will determine whether a country performs in the first half, the second, or in a position chosen by those responsible for the festival.
Leaving aside Sweden, which will be in charge of opening the final gala thanks to a previous draw, the other 25 finalists will have to participate in a draw that will have 6 ballots from the first half, another 6 from the second half, and up to 13 ballots from producer’s choice.
In this way, the majority of the order of the final gala will be chosen “by hand” by a group of Eurovision producers: “It is about creating the best television show possible and giving all the artists the opportunity to shine (… ) Adding the flexibility of Producer’s Choice gives us the ability to create an even more exciting Grand Finale where the different tempos flow better,” says Christer Björkman.
