The case of Daniel Sancho continues to be in the media spotlight since he confessed to having murdered and dismembered the Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta in Thailand. After the first interrogation, Rodolfo Sancho’s son was transferred to Koh Samui prison, where he is awaiting trial.

Based on all the evidence collected, and despite Sancho’s version that says otherwise, the Thai police are clear that it was a premeditated murder. For this reason, they plan to request the death penalty for the accused, which could be reduced to life imprisonment if they have his cooperation in the trial. Meanwhile, the victim’s family has hired the services of a Spanish legal team.

This Friday, the Mañaneros program has contacted Juan Gonzalo Espina, lawyer for the Arrieta family in Spain, to find out their next steps. First of all, Espina wanted to make it clear that the family is looking for a legal team in Thailand to be able to participate in the trial.

Likewise, they are clear: “They are going to try to bring the full weight of the law to bear and be hand in hand with the Prosecutor’s Office when it comes to coordinating the requested sentences.” And they intend to carry part of the defense from the country of origin of the alleged murderer, Daniel Sancho.

But if they have decided to look for a Spanish lawyer for something, it is to fight against what they believe is an injustice on the part of a sector of the press in this country. “The family has felt devastated and helpless because of everything that has been happening, and they have felt abandoned by some of the media,” said the lawyer.

“The family wants Edwin Arrieta to be respected and that a message can be sent to public opinion that the events have been fateful and that we are facing a vile murder,” he added.

With this, the legal team in Spain has three objectives. The first is to coordinate with Colombia to “bring your loved one’s body to the country.” The second is “to be with the legal team that will represent the interests of the Arrieta family in Thailand.”

Finally, the Arrieta family is clear that one of their main concerns is ensuring the good treatment of their family member in Spain. “We are also going to be very attentive to respecting the death, name and dignity of Edwin Arrieta and to be able to demand any rectification when his dignity is attacked,” he added.
