In recent days, a video from more than a year ago has circulated on social media in which the singer Irma Farelo, better known as Mushkaa, reproached some Catalans for being too “aggressive” with the use of the language.
“I love Catalan, but there are people who speak it in such an aggressive way that it makes those who could speak it normally feel rejected because they will call them charnego,” he assured the singer in a Radio Hangar podcast.
After the controversy generated by these statements, which have come to light again in the context of the publication of SexeSexy, the new song by Mushkaa and her sister Bad Gyal, the singers’ father Eduard Farelo, has come out in defense of his daughter.
He has done it with a Twitter thread, where he makes a closed and well-argued defense in favor of the singer. Farelo remembers that these statements by Mushkaa are from months ago and were made within a context in which she had long received criticism for the “macaronic” Catalan, she says, that she uses in her songs.
Although he recognizes that the singer’s way of expressing it “may not be correct,” he insists that they are the statements of a young artist and not those of a professor or a high-ranking institutional official.
He also criticizes that the same people who get heated with these statements later use terms like sell-out or collaborationist: “That, really, is a drunken bar at five in the morning,” he closes the Twitter thread.
