Alyssa Milano has become the protagonist of the controversy. The unforgettable Phoebe Halliwell from Charmed has sparked a heated debate on social media after starting a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to finance a trip for her son’s baseball team.
A decision that was harshly criticized by users on social networks, who believed that the actress and producer has plenty of money to pay for her son’s trip, without having to resort to donations from strangers on the Internet.
It all started when the American actress shared a link to the GoFundMe campaign in question through her social networks last Thursday. A fundraiser with which she intended to raise funds for her son (12) and his baseball teammates to go on a trip to Cooperstown, New York.
“Any amount will be more than appreciated. You can read more about the team and make a donation,” wrote the actress on X (former Twitter) before adding the link to the campaign.
In an attempt perhaps to go unnoticed, the actress organized the controversial campaign using her married name, Alyssa Bugliari (the interpreter has been married to the co-founder of the famous CAA representation agency David Bugliari since 2009, with whom she shares her children, Milo (12) and Elizabella (9)).
The actress’s decision, however, was not in good taste for many users on social networks, who considered that her fundraising attempts showed how “disconnected” from reality the protagonist of Melrose Place was.
“Imagine being so out of touch that you ask your followers to contribute money for your son’s trip when you have a net worth of $10 million,” one user wrote. “This is disgusting. Pay it yourself.”
The actress has a million-dollar asset as a result of all her years of work, but so does her husband, who according to experts accumulates about five million dollars in his bank accounts. A detail that did not go unnoticed by network users, since the campaign was in her name.
At the moment, the campaign has already exceeded the initial 10,000 dollars, with 12,040 raised to date (about 11,100 euros, at the exchange rate).
After publishing the campaign and becoming the focus of the media hurricane, the actress wanted to respond to the criticism through her Instagram account. She has done it in a very peculiar way: showing how her son Milo responded personally to one of those detractors.
The user in question told the boy on the social network that he was grateful that the teenager dedicated his time to helping stray dogs, and that he hoped that his mother “who has a fortune of 10 million dollars would donate to the animal shelter.” The user went on to say that “knowing she has this money, he shouldn’t be asking middle class families for money” to donate because she was “selfish.”
The determined boy answered bluntly: “You are aware that I am only 12 years old and I love my mother. My mother is the best person of all time. She does everything for everyone.”
His mother replied: “All parents raise money for their children’s sports teams. I’m no different. I would love to pay for travel, transportation, hotel, food and drink, uniforms and everything the teams do for This type of trip to the entire team and their families, I cannot afford to do it. Maybe one day,” he assured.
“Leave the kids alone. Let them play baseball. If you are against donating, don’t donate. If you want to make a donation to help the team’s families, we appreciate it,” he concluded.
