Comedian Chris Rock has returned to Los Angeles just in time for the Oscars, marking his first public appearance in the city since Will Smith’s now-infamous open-handed slapping incident two years ago. Although his attendance at the Oscar ceremony has not been confirmed, Rock has been seen in good company and in good spirits, suggesting that the past altercation with Smith has become water behind him.

Rock was seen last Thursday afternoon, March 7, at the doors of the Sunset Marquis hotel in West Hollywood, with a positive attitude and ready to enjoy the atmosphere of the Oscar gala. Some witnesses have assured Page Six that they saw the comedian “happy” and “ready to make his rounds”, which indicates a significant emotional recovery since the 2022 altercation.

He also crossed paths with the singer Melissa Etheridge, a meeting that both shared with joy on social networks, showing their mutual admiration and good disposition. According to the artist, Rock went crazy when he saw it: “My favorite performance.”

There is no one who does not remember the incident between Smith and Rock, who was presenting the 94th Academy Awards in 2022. It was going to be the big night for Smith, who had everything to win – and did – the Oscar for Best Actor. However, the interpreter did not know how to manage his emotions after a bad joke by Rock about the alopecia of Jada Pinkett Smith, his wife.

Right after the joke, Smith got up from his seat and went on stage to attack Rock, who took the hit practically without flinching and continued making jokes. He seemed like a well-rehearsed gag, but it was real. This incident resulted in a punishment for Smith and therapy sessions for Rock.

Two years after the slap, it does not seem that the comedian and the actor will meet again at the Oscars. Smith will not attend the 2024 Oscars due to a ban stemming from his conduct, in addition to filming Bad Boys 4 in Miami. It is also not confirmed that Rock will attend the ceremony.
