Next Friday, January 12, the singer Chanel will publish her first album: Agua. The album comes two years after her acclaimed participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, a performance with which she achieved a more than well-deserved third place, which returned hope to our country after years of disappointments and bad results.
Since then, Chanel has released different hit songs, highlighting Clavaíto above the others, the single she released with Abraham Mateo. This song currently accumulates more than 88.6 million views on Spotify.
Although thousands of fans are waiting like May rain for the new songs from the artist of Cuban origin, her path to this point has not been easy at all. Chanel has had to deal with unprecedented digital harassment, something that has taken its toll. The lynching towards Chanel began when she won the Benidorm Fest 2022 with her hypnotic SloMo. Her victory came thanks to the vote of the professional jury, since the public was more supportive of other candidates such as Rigoberta Bandini or the Tanxugueiras.
Dissatisfied with the result, thousands of online users accused the festival of ‘fraud’ and focused their hatred on the singer who won, who had simply done her job in the best possible way. Furthermore, a lot of the criticism that Terrero began to receive had to do with his skin color or her origin, which is why he had a really bad time. She also received a lot of sexist and misogynistic hate and many people even accused her of promoting the sexualization of women with her performance.
Despite everything, the artist focused on the song festival and managed to take Spain to a well-deserved top 3, a merit that surprised the audience and silenced the mouths of all those who said that Spain’s bad streak would continue.
In order to channel this entire process and come out of it successfully, Chanel had to ask for professional help. In an interview for El País, the singer has acknowledged that she is still recovering with her psychologist from the insults she suffered and the great media pressure to which she was subjected. ”I received horrible racist and sexist insults. Also from famous people. Obviously I have a blacklist, which I’m not going to share with you. But those people hurt me, my family and friends a lot. I do not want to meet with those people and my greeting is withdrawn. “It’s a matter of honor,” she said.
There is an element of his new album that has caught the attention of his most loyal followers. In the last line of the album’s credits you can read a somewhat peculiar thank you: ”And to those who put stones in my path, THANK YOU”.
In the aforementioned interview, Chanel spoke about this phrase and acknowledged that she has learned a lot from the industry in the last two years: “It’s something I’m working with in therapy: also embracing the bad. Life sometimes puts us on that path…”.
