Carlos Santana is one of the great Mexican guitarists in the music industry. His interest in music began when he was very young, since his father played the violin. And although at first he started with cante, he immediately realized that his thing was the guitar.
The 75-year-old musician is of Mexican origin, but when his musical career was taking off he obtained American citizenship. After that, the artist founded a music band, called Santana, in which they mixed rock and Latin music. The success was resounding and they managed to sell more than 100 million records.
In addition to having great songs, which have gone down in history, the musician and his band managed to win several of the most important awards in the music industry. But not everything in the life of Carlos Santana has been so beautiful. More than twenty years ago, the artist revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that his childhood had been marked by sexual abuse that he suffered when he was just a child. The guitarist claimed to have received abuse “almost every day between the ages of 10 and 12.”
The abuser, who brought him toys and gifts, was a tourist from the United States, who crossed the border into Mexico and where he became friends with the artist’s parents. After many years in silence about this terrible episode in his life, the artist has once again spoken out about these events in a new interview with People.
The Mexican guitarist was once again honest about this issue and revealed to the medium how he managed to close this wound and forgive his attacker. ”Acceptance and forgiveness are really spiritual,” Santana said. In addition, with the passage of time, he has known how to look at the situation from another point of view. ”I’ve learned to look at everyone who has ever gone out of their way to hurt me, demean me or make me feel less than, as if they were 5 or 6 years old, and I can look at them with understanding and compassion,” the musician declared.
The guitarist assured in the interview that he was not asking for punishment for his abuser. ”There is a saying that says: Hurt people hurt people. It is my pain. It happened to me. But if you open your hands and let it go, then you don’t feel it anymore,” he declared.
