A man from Chico, California was taken into custody on Thursday for supposedly setting off a fire that has scorched almost 75,000 acres of land. The man allegedly ignited a car and pushed it down a 60-foot embankment, according to authorities. The Butte County District Attorney’s Office revealed that the 42-year-old suspect was apprehended by Cal Fire arson investigators in connection to what is now known as the Park Fire.

Reports indicate that an unidentified individual was witnessed pushing a flaming vehicle into a gully close to the Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday. After setting the car ablaze, the suspect calmly left the scene, blending in with other bystanders who were present, and then fled as the fire rapidly spread.

Cal Fire arson investigators acted swiftly, securing the area and launching an investigation to uncover the identity of the individual responsible for the incident. With the cooperation of the DA’s office, a local judge issued a warrant for the man’s arrest, leading to his detention.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to Butte County Jail and is being held without bail until his scheduled arraignment on Monday. Cal Fire announced on Thursday evening that the Park Fire had significantly increased in size since it first erupted the day before.

Within a few hours, the fire ballooned from a 400-acre blaze to a massive 71,000-acre inferno, destroying everything in its path. The agency took to social media to urge people to be prepared by having a “go bag” ready and planning multiple evacuation routes in case they need to flee their community.

As wildfires continue to pose a threat in various regions, it is crucial for individuals to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others. The devastating impact of such fires serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being prepared and ready to act swiftly in the face of danger.
