A young pro-independence Catalan rejects his date on First Dates for "speaking a lot of Spanish"

In the search for love, there are those who have a very clear list or series of requirements, and sometimes they are not very flexible. The program First Dates, from Cuatro, gives epic moments in these blind dates in which you can see personalities of all kinds and with very varied tastes. One of the encounters that has surprised the audience and the networks has been that of a 19-year-old physical education student from Girona, Aleix, with Abril, an 18-year-old hairdressing student from Barcelona.

Aleix’s fundamental condition for finding the perfect girl was that she be “catalaneta”, expressing his desire for her to speak Catalan and love Catalonia as much as he does. When one of the program’s waitresses, Laura Boado, told the Girona resident that Abril was from Barcelona, ??she exclaimed “perfect, we have her!” The curious thing about that meeting was that Abril already knew him thanks to a video on TikTok in which she announced her participation in the program presented by Carlos Sobera.

From the beginning the differences between the two came to the fore. Aleix, passionate about sports due to his training in physical education, found someone with different tastes in April. But it was not in the hobbies where the discrepancies emerged but in the language in which they communicate. While Abril claimed to speak both Catalan and Spanish, Aleix expressed his preference for Catalan and noted the absence of this language in the conversation.

The political disagreement gained strength when Aleix, faithful to his independence convictions, declared: “I am from Catalonia, Catalonia. I am left-wing. I want the independence of Catalonia.” Given this, the young Abril, in a more pragmatic way, expressed her appreciation for Spain and Catalonia, without delving too deeply into politics.

Language and politics aside, the musical preferences of both contributed to widening their differences. While Abril indicated that he preferred to listen to reggaeton and that he had a great predilection for Quevedo, Aleix leaned exclusively towards Catalan music.

When reaching the final decision, Aleix chose not to have a second date, basing his choice on the differences in hobbies and the importance of the use of Catalan. “I feel very good speaking in Catalan and you have pointed out to me that you speak a lot of Spanish and that is why I would not have a second date,” Aleix argued. In correspondence, Abril also indicated that he would not have another date, since he did not meet his expectations.
