What cars can change their license plate from old format to new format?

The registration of a vehicle could be defined as its National Identity Document. A license plate is not simply a set of alphanumeric characters that are integrated into the car; but rather it is a unique identifier that links the tourism with its owner and that, in addition, is mandatory to have in order if you want to circulate on public roads in Spanish geography. No two license plates are the same and it allows you to identify not only the vehicle with the owner of the car, but also with the insurance you have or even the fines you have pending to pay.

In the year 2000, the registration format changed in Spain. It ended with a license plate made up of provincial acronyms followed by a numbering of four numbers and two letters. Thus, this registration system was changed to a new format formed by the combination of four numbers and three consonant letters except for the letter Ñ and the letter Q.

Although it is true that the renewal of the vehicle fleet has made it gradually more difficult to see license plates of the old format, in Spain there is still a large number of vehicles registered before the year 2000. In this sense, it is possible that many vehicle owners These types of cars may wonder if it is possible to change the format of their old license plates to the new standard. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has launched a procedure that allows the license plate to be changed from the old format to the new one. Of course, they must meet a series of requirements.

As disclosed by the DGT, you can request to change the registration from the old format to the new one as established in the General Vehicle Regulations. In other words, if the provincial acronyms found on your license plate are not the province in which you are currently registered, you can start the procedure in question. To do this, if you wish to proceed with the request to change the registration, you must go to an ITV station and request that they issue you a new technical inspection card.

Once you have completed the previous procedure, you must provide proof of the change of address, ID or a document that proves the new address. In addition, you must add proof of payment of the fee corresponding to the process, the ITV cards (the new and the old one) and the vehicle’s registration certificate.
