Volkswagen Group plans to launch an electric car that costs 20,000 euros on the market for the first time by 2027, as announced by brand director Thomas Schäfer, at the group’s annual digital press conference. “The provisional title is ID.1 and the vehicle is planned for 2027,” said the manager in statements from the event collected by DPA. Schäfer has also assured that the compact car is “intended” to complete the lower end of the company’s electric portfolio and offer “affordable electric mobility for all.”

For this reason, the date was deliberately set one year after the ID.2all planned for 2026 and expected to cost less than 25,000 euros. Work on the ID.1 is already very advanced, according to Schäfer. “We are already working on it, we know what the car has to be like,” he said.

It is yet to be decided where it will be manufactured. “From an economic point of view it is an enormous challenge,” commented Schäfer. Currently, four scenarios are being studied to achieve this objective. “We will make a decision in the short term,” added the manager. Volkswagen is also reportedly talking to Renault to cooperate on the small electric car in order to achieve larger quantities.

The ID.1 is one of eleven new electric models that Volkswagen plans to launch between now and 2027, since the ID.7 went on sale last year. The current Golf, Tiguan and T-Roc combustion models will also be “taken to the electric future.” Volkswagen thus maintains its electric course despite the current weakness in demand. “Volkswagen’s future is electric,” said Schäfer.

Volkswagen revealed last Wednesday its plans to launch 30 new models across the group this year to boost sales momentum, many of which will be electric, such as the aforementioned ID.1.
