Just a few days ago, at the prestigious annual Barett-Jackson auction event in Scottsdale (Arizona), an anonymous buyer decided to shell out an enormous fortune to acquire what was one of former United States President Donald Trump’s favorite supercars. It is no wonder, because apart from its unique origin, the Diablo VT that belonged to the controversial president is a unique piece of motorsport history and an example of Lamborghini’s excellence in technology and engineering.
Trump ordered this supercar from the brand in 1997. The Italian luxury car manufacturer, with whom he had a good relationship by owning several of its vehicles, customized it to his liking with whims, such as the color of the paint, a Blu Le Mans that was not available in the Lamborghini catalog for this model before Trump requested it.
As an anecdote, it should be noted that, probably by express request, this Diablo VT was the only one that came off the production line in Sant’Agata Bolognese with this tone. It was combined with black leather interior upholstery.
The reasons why the former president opted for this two-seater is that it boasted an extreme and groundbreaking design. Furthermore, it was a powerful and exclusive vehicle: only 132 units of this type were produced for the North American market between 1997 and 1998. He also became infatuated with the name of the model and expressly asked Lamborghini, a brand with which he already had a previous relationship, to They installed a special plaque on the door that read “Donal Trump 1997 Diablo.”
The vehicle has a 5.7-liter, 48-valve V12 mid-engine that delivers 485 HP of power and 580 Nm of maximum torque and is associated with a five-speed manual transmission. It has a VT four-wheel drive system.
The supercar is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 325 km/h. Trump delighted in his Lamborghini Diablo VT and drove it on the country’s roads until the summer of 2002, when he decided to sell it and it passed into the hands of its next owner.
With all these peculiarities under its belt, Trump’s Diablo has been sold again, now for a figure around one million euros, an amount much higher than what it would reach if it were the supercar in its conventional version.
The price offered by the new owner is a world record for a Diablo at auction and includes the manufacturer’s documentation, two tool bags installed in the trunk and a car cover.
