The presence of speed cameras on Spanish roads and cities has been increasing in recent years, according to a recent report by Coyote, a company specialized in driving assistance systems and radar warning devices.
Last year, in 2023, a total of 2,823 radars of all types were recorded in Spain, from fixed to mobile, distributed on both urban and interurban roads.
Although this figure may seem considerable, it is far from being compared with other European countries. According to data from Scdb.info, a website specialized in radar reports, Russia leads the list with 18,414 devices, followed by Italy with 11,171.
Surprisingly, Italy, with a much smaller territory than Russia, has 17% more radars than Spain. Following on the list are the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium and Sweden, placing Spain in seventh place in the European radar ranking.
It should be noted that the absolute number of radars is not the only relevant aspect. The density of these devices per 1,000 kilometers of road also plays a determining role in the probability of being fined for speeding.
In this regard, Italy leads the list with approximately 22 radars per 1,000 kilometers of road, closely followed by Belgium and the United Kingdom, which have almost 20 radars per 1,000 kilometers.
In contrast, Spain has a much lower density of radars, with only 3 devices per 1,000 kilometers of road. Although the number of fixed radars in Spain amounts to 2,062, according to Statista calculations, this figure is still considerably lower compared to most neighboring countries.
