The world’s most beautiful distillery

You almost think that you’ve left the Speyside for the Speyside Destillery is almost one and a half hours drive south of Aberlour. But when you arrive and see the Spey-the river running along the distillery, we are no longer in doubt.

the Story starts in 1956, when the former ubådskaptajn George Christie buys a plot of land at Drumguish near Kingussie, where there is an old mill and a number of older lagringsbygninger back to 1760. The year after, he relies a grain distillery near Alloa in the north of Scotland. The distillery is going well, and in 1962, he decides to build a distillery near Drumguish. But there goes the 30 years from dream to reality, and the distillery is first done in 1987. A man built it using stones from the older warehouse buildings and only the building where the mill was, was allowed to stand back. In 1990, it was finally ready and able to begin production, and in 1993 the first whisky from the distillery called Drumguish. At this time, took over George’s son, but George Christie came, however, regularly at the distillery until his death in 2012.

the Distillery is quite small and currently has a production of about 600.000 liters, and working with the four washbacks and a pair of boilers for distillation. The boilers come from the Lochside distillery, but was the card down to fit in the buildings. Working with a long fermenteringstid in almost a week. The water comes right outside of the door from a local source, and used exclusively barley from nearby fields in Scotland. Despite the fact that it is a newer distillery, there is not installed any kind of cooling or computer control. Everything is controlled by means of the hand and not least dømmeevne. Fadlager has not at the distillery, but near Glasgow.

In 2014 launched the one series Spey, which is a NAS with the name Tenné (tawny in latin and refers to the portfad finish), 12-year and 18-years. In 2017 came Byron’s Choice, Spey Cask 27 years old. And last is Trutina (pure and balanced on the latin) and Fumare (to smoke in latin) is introduced. Later in the year, a 12-year peatet.

There is also a series with the name Beinn Dubh, The Black from the series is completely black and completed on hard-burned portvinsfade.

It is John Harvey McDonough from Harvey’s, which in 2012 has taken over, and when he has good connection in Asia, has had success here. Spiritusfirmaet Harvey’s has a very long and fascinating history. The company was established way back in 1770 by the brothers John and Robert Harvey, and the company has previously been responsible for both the construction and operation of several scottish distilleries, such as Bruichladdich on Islay. Also whiskymærket SPEY has a long history, since this brand was developed by the Harvey’s brand back in the 1800s. For many years the family has bought malt whiskies to the mark on the changing distilleries, bl.a. at the Speyside Distillery in recent decades. After the acquisition of the distillery in 2012 is the brand and distillery are now assembled in one unit.

for many years, the SPEY was a significant whiskymærke in the east, fol.a. in Taiwan, where today is the 3. best-selling malt whiskies. In Europe SPEY has been a well hidden secret, which you now want to remedy.
