The limit for not submitting the income tax return changes this year

Tax season has already begun. Since last April 3, you can now file the 2023 income tax return. This year, the campaign will be extended until next July 1.

Who is required to submit the income tax return? In principle, all natural persons residing in Spain are required to submit their declaration, but there are certain exceptions. Spanish regulations have raised the income threshold for those taxpayers who receive income from two payers or more, going from 14,000 euros to 15,000 euros gross per year. This means that if during the last year an individual received total income below this new figure and had more than one payer, they will be exempt from the obligation to submit the income tax return, as long as they do not exceed any other limit or are in no other circumstance that requires the filing of the declaration.

This increase in the limit for not submitting the income tax return is a relief for many taxpayers, especially for those who work with temporary contracts, have several employers or carry out complementary work activities, they explain in HelpMyCash.

Be careful, this change affects taxpayers who have received income from two or more payers when the income obtained from the second and subsequent ones exceeds 1,500 euros. In the rest of the cases, the limit remains 22,000 euros.

In any case, taxpayers who are entitled to receive a refund from the Treasury can submit their declaration, even if they are not required to. In fact, it is the only way to get a refund.

Taxpayers can check whether they are required to file the return and whether the result is to be returned or entered by entering their draft. Once inside, they can find out the result of the declaration and it will appear whether or not they are required to do it.

And how can you download the draft? Too easy. You just have to enter the Tax Agency website or download its app and identify yourself. To verify identity, there are three options: use a digital certificate or an electronic DNI, use the Cl@ve system (you need to be previously registered) or request a reference number.

The reference number can be obtained from the Tax Agency website by clicking on “Get your reference number” and using the value in box 505 from last year’s declaration. This box refers to the general taxable base subject to tax and can be found in the income or return document or in the copy of the declaration, they explain in HelpMyCash. People who did not file the return last year have it easier: instead of having to look for box 505, they only have to indicate the last five digits of the IBAN of one of their accounts.

Taxpayers who are not able to find box 505 to obtain their reference number and who do not have a Cl@ve or an eDNI, can register in Cl@ve by making a video call. It’s quick and very easy.
