The explosion of a transformer leaves shops and restaurants in the center of Madrid without electricity

Electrical blackout in the center of the capital in the middle of the Christmas season. The explosion of a transformer in the Plaza del Conde de Barajas yesterday caused numerous shops, restaurants and homes in the center of Madrid to be left without power.

The affected restaurants had to cancel their reservations as their kitchens were not working. Even the San Miguel Market was affected, reports Telemadrid, one of the most emblematic places to have snacks or taste pinchos in the center of the capital. Even some traffic lights were not working.

To alleviate the problem, large generator trucks have been installed to try to supply affected premises and homes during the first hours of this Friday.

The supplying company is Naturgy, which is working to fix the problem, but cannot determine when the problem will be definitively solved. The restaurants in the area are complaining because they are days of business lunches and dinners, so many of them had the sign posted as full and they have had to cancel reservations. “The extractor hood does not work and in the cold rooms the gender could have been lost,” says Jesús, owner of a restaurant, on public television.
