The electric version of the Mercedes G-Class, the legendary German off-road vehicle, is here

Although Mercedes-Benz has announced that, if there is demand, it will continue manufacturing internal combustion cars beyond 2030 – the year it had set to be a 100% electric brand – the star firm continues working on the launch of zero-emission models with the aim of offering at least one electric alternative in all the segments in which it is present. And one of them is that of purebred off-roaders, where it has, for more than four decades, a reference vehicle, the G-Class, which already has its 100% electric version, which we saw in prototype format almost ago. three years.

Like the internal combustion variants, the body of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology is built on a ladder chassis. The development team has modified and strengthened it to integrate electric propulsion. The combination of independent double-wishbone front suspension and newly developed rigid rear axle is also maintained. The 116 kWh ion battery provides enough energy to travel up to 473 kilometers.

It has four electric motors that develop a maximum total power of 432 kW and a torque of 1,164 Nm. The all-wheel drive system manages each of the motors independently to transmit the optimal thrust to each wheel in each circumstance. Equipped with the Low Range reducer, it offers spectacular off-road capabilities. The car virtually generates the function of conventional differential locks through intelligent torque vectoring. Additionally, the G-Turn option allows you to turn on your own on loose or unpaved surfaces.

Like the rest of the versions in the range, the new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology has a great inclination capacity, as it remains stable on lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees. According to the brand itself, with a maximum fording depth of 850 millimeters, this car exceeds its conventionally powered counterparts by 150 millimeters.

This electric version is immediately recognizable as a member of the iconic G-Class family. The exterior takes on a striking appearance with an optional black radiator grille. A number of distinctive features differentiate the all-electric variant from conventionally powered models. These include a slightly raised bonnet and so-called air curtains in the rear wheel arches, as well as a box at the rear where the charging cable is stored (where the spare wheel would traditionally go). The new A-pillar cladding and roof spoiler lip help optimize aerodynamics.

The vehicle is equipped as standard with the infotainment system, multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather and ambient lighting. The redesigned off-road control unit and the new Offroad Cockpit are available as options to enhance the off-road experience with additional digital functions.

The brand puts the Edition One launch version on sale. The price of the car in Germany starts at 142,621.50 euros. We still do not know the rates for the Spanish market.
