Speeding continues to be one of the main causes of fatal accidents that occur in Spain. With the operation exit campaign just around the corner, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is preparing for another year to raise awareness among drivers about this problem. One of the dissuasive measures is the publication by the body of the location of the fixed speed cameras along the road network. In fact, applications such as Google Maps already allow you to integrate these useful notices into your cartographies.
The DGT periodically warns of the section in which the mobile speed controls will be located, without ever revealing their exact location. Some drivers reject this issue and their mischief has led them to install detectors and inhibitors to control the position of the cinemometers or nullify their effectiveness respectively. In March of last year, a modification of the Traffic Law came into force, which prohibits the installation of these devices in vehicles and is punishable by fines and the loss of license points.
The detectors notify the driver that they are in front of a Traffic radar. This device is capable of detecting the waves emitted by a cinemometer and thus find out its exact location. This device allows those drivers who are traveling at a speed higher than the maximum allowed to step on the brake and thus evade the controls, even in the sections where the mobile radars are located.
With the reform of the Traffic regulations, the fine for the possession of a detection device, even if it is not used, rises from 200 euros prior to the reform to the 500 euros that currently accompanies and the withdrawal of 3 points from the license for drivers intercepted by agents of the Civil Guard.
A particularly more serious case is that of inhibitors. These devices are not only capable of detecting the presence of radar, but also prevent cinemometers, both those that work with waves and lasers, from measuring the speed at which a vehicle is moving. Drivers who have this kind of device installed in their car can thus enjoy impunity when it comes to exceeding speed limits and avoid fines that would otherwise be guaranteed.
The law remains harsh in its penalties for the use of inhibitors. The installation of these devices is sanctioned with a fine of up to 6,000 euros and the deduction of 6 points from the driving license, even in the case of being turned off during a possible traffic control. In addition, the workshop in which its installation has been carried out must pay a fine of 30,000 euros in case of being discovered.
