Joseph and Nolli have just signed a feat or a recklessness, depending on how you look at it. This Swiss couple, aged 84 and 79, has traveled more than 2,500 kilometers from Zurich behind them, with a caravan towed by a tractor that cannot exceed 30 kilometers per hour. At a slow pace, they have managed to cross Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France and all of northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela.
But the idyllic journey ended when the Civil Guard stopped him to request the documentation. The meritorious woman stopped them in a street in Bergondo (A Coruña) next to the N-VI. It did not happen like on previous occasions, when they were also stopped to demand their papers but they were allowed to continue. In this case, the agents advised them that the combination of tractor and caravan was illegal. And that they could not continue with their journey.
“Draw a caravan with an agricultural tractor, designed and built exclusively to drag, push, carry or drive agricultural implements, machinery or trailers,” the Civil Guard warned them.
The agents placed a blocker in the vehicle that made it impossible for them to move. This Swiss couple complains that they were not even allowed to move to a safer place away from the road. They spent several days in the Nacional VI without electricity, without water, without shade and without fresh food to eat. In addition, they were handed a fine of 200 euros.
Despite the incident, Joseph and Nolli don’t lose their smile. Now, they are in a campsite in the Coruña town of Gandarío (Bergondo). And there they receive the love of other campers and even residents of the area who come to greet them and convey their full support, while they wait for justice to act and find out how they can return to their hometown.
While the sanction is being resolved, in statements to Atlas, they assure that they will end their journey as they have begun: “We want to do the return trip on our tractor.”
