Alfonso Rueda was the winner of the Galician elections held last Sunday. The head of the Popular Party list revalidated his position as leader in Galicia by obtaining the absolute majority, thus ensuring his continuity at the head of the Xunta for the next four years.
Beyond his political status, as president of the Xunta de Galicia, a position he accepted in May 2022 after taking over from Alberto Núñez Feijóo when he was appointed as the new leader of the PP, Rueda is also recognized for his passion for the motorcycle and the bicycle. The Galician president finds in his love of these two-wheeled vehicles an escape valve for his daily activity, as can be seen from the messages he publishes on social networks.
On both his official X profile (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, Rueda has shared images and comments related to his passion for motorcycles. Especially iconic is the photograph that he published on his X account on May 22, 2022, the same day that he was elected president of the PP of Galicia with 97.2% of the delegates’ votes.
In this photograph, Rueda is seen riding an imposing BMW 1200 RT hours after being proclaimed Feijóo’s successor. “Happy and intense day. Nothing better than finishing it off by taking the motorcycle and disconnecting a little,” wrote the then brand new Galician president in the post in which he appears posing with a maritime landscape as a background.
Rueda has expressed on several occasions how the motorcycle gives him a feeling of freedom. One of these moments was when the Galician leader celebrated the lifting of confinement due to the covid pandemic. In an interview with the digital media TUR43, the man from Pontevedra said the following: “This weekend, which will be the first in which I can continue outside the perimeter of my town hall and in which the weather will be good, I am clear that the motorcycle does not forgive her.”
However, due to his political activity, Rueda admits that he uses his motorcycle less than he would like. This is what he said on May 23 of last year when he went with his friends from the Motoclub Moteros de Morrazo to a rally in Bueu (Pontevedra). This is the video he posted on his Instagram account.
In addition to motorcycles, other activities also occupy a prominent place among Alfonso Rueda’s passions for his leisure time. The Galician president has revealed that he has traveled the Camino de Santiago several times by bicycle, highlighting his growing interest in this means of transport.
“Lately, I have been doing the Camino de Santiago by bike. Last year I did Oporto-Muxía by bike. This year I would like to do it too. I’ve taken to cycling lately. The Camino by bike was a discovery and, furthermore, now we have all the roads prepared,” said the leader of the Galician PP in the interview given to TUR43, when he served as vice president of the Xunta and as head of the Tourism area.
On another occasion, Rueda not only limited himself to participating in the popular Vig-Bay pedalo, as he attested in a publication on social networks, but he has also shown firm support for the DisCamino association, which is dedicated to facilitating the access to the Camino de Santiago for people with disabilities.
His active participation in this event highlights his love of cycling and reflects his commitment to inclusion and support for initiatives that promote accessibility for all.
