Tesla's latest problem: sue an Indian battery manufacturer for copying its brand

New front for Tesla. Elon Musk’s automobile and electrical components company has sued Indian electric battery maker Tesla Power for advertising under its trademark. The American giant has asked an Indian court to prevent it from continuing to use that name.

The company makes this decision after several requirements. It sent “a cease and desist notice on April 18, 2022” to Tesla Power, which the company failed to comply with and “continued to advertise” in the same way, according to the order published this Friday on the official website of the Superior Court of New Delhi.

During the first hearing, which occurred this week, the company upheld its first lawsuit and maintained that Tesla Power’s promotions violated the law.

To prove its accusations, the company presented during the trial images of several advertisements of the defendant in which Tesla is read in large letters, followed by Power USA, while advertising batteries or electric vehicles, two of the main market niches of the company. also owner of X (formerly Twitter).

For its part, Tesla Power assured that its business is focused on “lead acid batteries” and denied that it manufactured electric vehicles, alleging that the advertisements in which they made reference to these vehicles were part of a marketing alliance with another manufacturer. . And it pledged not to use Tesla logos or trademarks in new promotions.

The trial occurs at a time of great expectation regarding the possible landing of Tesla in India, an emerging and powerful market that the American company has been trying to conquer for years, although it has not yet confirmed a definitive commitment.

Tesla is going through a delicate moment. The American electric car manufacturer is planning to launch “more affordable” cars at the end of this year or early 2025, as reported by the company led by Elon Musk in the presentation of its accounts for the first quarter of 2024.

The results have not been good. The company reduced its income by 9%, to 21,301 million dollars (19,931.1 million euros).
