Rwanda Rugby Union, in collaboration with Rugby Africa and World Rugby, recently organized a Level 2 Coaching Course for Rugby Sevens

Rwanda Rugby Union, in partnership with Rugby Africa and World Rugby, conducted a Coaching Course for Rugby Sevens, led by esteemed World Rugby Educator, Robert Bwali. The two-day event took place from May 23rd to May 24th, 2024, with the participation of ten coaches, including Rugby Development Officers, club coaches, and the Technical Director, all equipped with a Level One coaching certification.

The course, held at the Kigali View Hotel in Nyarugenge district, focused on essential topics such as the aims and values of Rugby Sevens, game format, principles of play, coachable components, functional roles, and key factor analysis on the first day. The second day included practical coaching tasks like reviewing, individual and team profiling, devising game plans, maintaining coaching diaries, and engaging in coaching assignments to enhance skill application.

Participants praised the effective training methodology and expressed eagerness to apply their new knowledge in daily coaching activities. During the closing ceremony, Florent Habyarimana from the Ministry of Sports and Kamanda Tharcisse, President of Rwanda Rugby Federation, emphasized the importance of the course in improving coaching capabilities for the national Rugby Sevens team.

President Tharcisse highlighted the course’s impact on enhancing coaching qualifications for Rugby Sevens in Rwanda, aiming to sustain the game’s growth. Mr. Habyarimana encouraged coaches to utilize their expertise diligently, with the ministry pledging ongoing support for their future efforts. Certificates of Participation were awarded, with the potential for Level Two coaching certificates for Rugby Sevens from World Rugby upon task completion.

Additionally, Educator Robert Bwali conducted a Union Review session with Rwanda Rugby Union and offered guidance at the interschools Sevens Kagame Cup. The collaboration continued with discussions on further training opportunities with the Rwanda National Olympic Solidarity Committee. This initiative is set to elevate the coaching standards in Rwanda’s Rugby Sevens landscape.
