Southern Glazer’s, a major distributor of alcohol, recently announced the passing of their chairman, Harvey Chaplin, at the age of 95. Chaplin was a highly influential figure in the wine and spirits industry and played a significant role in the growth of the company.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1929, Chaplin began his career in the industry at a young age. He worked his way up the ranks and eventually became the Chairman and CEO of Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits in 1994. Under his leadership, the company expanded its operations to 45 US markets and Canada, becoming the largest distributor of beverage alcohol in North America.
Although his son, Wayne Chaplin, took over as CEO of the company, Harvey Chaplin remained actively involved in the business. His vision for creating a national footprint and delivering value to both suppliers and customers has shaped the company’s success over the years.
In a statement, Wayne Chaplin expressed his deep sadness at the loss of his father and praised his leadership, philanthropy, and dedication to both his family and the business. Bennett Glazer, executive vice chairman of Southern Glazer’s, also shared his condolences and highlighted Chaplin’s commitment to family and community.
Harvey Chaplin is survived by his wife, Roberta, as well as three children, nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions in his name can be made to various organizations, including the Harvey R. Chaplin Family Stroke and Chest Pain Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University.
The legacy of Harvey Chaplin will undoubtedly live on in the industry and the hearts of those who knew and worked with him. His impact as a leader and visionary will be greatly missed by the Southern Glazer’s team and beyond.
