A Mid-Michigan lottery club recently made headlines by winning the largest Powerball prize ever in Michigan. The club, known as “The Breakfast Club,” matched all the numbers drawn on January 1, 2024, winning an incredible $842.4 million jackpot. The winning ticket was purchased at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc in Grand Blanc.
Representatives from the lottery commission presented Mark K. Harder, the club’s representative, with a massive check for $842.4 million. Additionally, the Nannoshi family, owners of the Food Castle of Grand Blanc, received a $50,000 commission for selling the winning ticket.
Mark K. Harder, an attorney representing “The Breakfast Club,” shared that this win was a first-time large jackpot for two of the club’s members. The club typically buys Powerball tickets when the jackpot reaches hundreds of millions of dollars. The morning after the drawing, one club member realized they held the winning ticket after checking the numbers on their cell phone. Despite the excitement, they still went to work.
The club decided to receive their prize as a one-time lump sum payment of approximately $425 million after tax withholdings. With their winnings, they plan to retire early, travel, and share their good fortune with family and nonprofits they care about. The club members expressed their gratitude for the life-changing win, stating that this prize will positively impact their family for generations to come.
For selling the winning ticket, the Food Castle of Grand Blanc received a $50,000 bonus commission. Owner Bill Nannoshi stated that they would donate the entire amount to their employees and the local community. The Lottery Commissioner, Suzanna Shkreli, highlighted how the big jackpot benefits not only the winners but also retailers like the Food Castle of Grand Blanc and Michigan schools.
The $842.4 million jackpot is the largest Powerball prize ever won in Michigan and the second-largest overall. The record for the largest jackpot won in Michigan is held by a $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot from January 2021. Powerball tickets can be purchased for $2 each at various locations across the state and online.
Players have the option to add a “Power Play” for an additional $1, which can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times. There is also a Double Play option for an extra $1 per play, offering a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing. The Powerball drawing takes place three times a week, and tickets are available in multiple states and territories.
The recent win by “The Breakfast Club” serves as a reminder of the life-changing possibilities that come with playing the lottery. As the winners look forward to a new chapter in their lives, the community celebrates alongside them, knowing that their good fortune will have a lasting impact.
