Mercadona has registered a sales volume of 4,422 million euros in Portugal since it landed in the country, in July 2019, until the end of 2022, a period in which it has contributed 1,297 million euros to the Portuguese GDP.

The figure is included in a report released today by the company and carried out by the Center for Research in Economic and Business Policies of the University of Minho lusa and the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie), on the fourth anniversary of its arrival in Portugal .

Until the end of 2022, the chain generated an impact on the Portuguese economy of “1,296.8 million euros in terms of income, more than 55,600 jobs (of equivalent annual duration) and 726.5 million” in taxes, he explained in a release.

In 2022, Mercadona’s accounts amounted to 480.9 million euros of income, 18,600 jobs and 263.2 million in tax revenue, with a sales volume of 1,477 million euros.

The company is about to open its 42nd store in the country, in Massamá (Sintra, Lisbon metropolitan area), which will be inaugurated this Friday.

The report also states that “the opening of supermarkets in medium-sized cities, on a Portuguese scale, is allowing activity to be retained in these municipalities, avoiding the transfer of income and employment to other nearby towns.”

Mercadona started its business in Portugal in the north of the country and has been expanding to the south, reaching the Lisbon region. “The expansion of the chain in the country will continue to increase its importance,” says the company.

Mercadona announced in June 2016 that it had chosen Portugal as its first international market, where it operates through the Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados. The first supermarket opened on July 2, 2019 in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia (Oporto district).

It currently has a network of 41 supermarkets in 10 districts (49 at the end of this year), more than 3,500 Portuguese workers, an operational logistics block in Póvoa de Varzim (north) and another under construction in Almeirim (center).

In addition, the company has 1,000 Portuguese suppliers from which it has purchased 789 million euros in 2022. It also has three co-innovation centers in Portugal, one in Matosinhos (Porto) since 2017 and another two in Lisbon and Vila do Conde (Porto). since 2021.
