A high income, a high occupation, a low volume of citizens with a low educational level, of workers with few studies and a small weight of the immigrant population make Matadepera the Catalan municipality of more than 500 inhabitants with a higher socioeconomic level. Just the opposite is what has led Barbens (in Lleida) to position itself as the town with the least socioeconomic development in Catalonia.
These are Idescat data based on six indicators. What the statistics do is compare the average of the community with each municipality, which means that Matadepera is 2.3 times more developed than Barbens. Assuming that the average for Catalonia is 100, Matadepera is at 131.8 and Barbens at 57.1.
Together on the podium of the most developed, the municipalities of Castellolí (131.8). Sant Cugat del Vallès (124.9%) and Tiana (124.5%). Instead, at the other extreme, along with Barbens, are Salt (62.0), Seròs (65.1) and Sant Pere Pescador (66.3).
The differences between towns are important: there are 37 municipalities that have a high territorial socioeconomic index because it exceeds the Catalan average by more than 20 percentage points. And at the other extreme, there are 31 with a low index: 20 points or more below the average.
Idescat highlights that of the 37 municipalities with a high socioeconomic level, 12 are in the metropolitan area, 10 in the central regions and 6 in the Alt Pyrenees and Aran. On the other hand, of the 31 with the lowest socioeconomic level, 16 are in Ponent and 9 in the Girona regions.
The statistics are also given by neighborhoods of Barcelona. Les Tres Torres, Sant Gervasi-Galvany and Pedralbes lead the ranking while Ciutat Meridiana, El Besòs i el Maresme and La Trinitat Vella are in the queue.
