Manufacturing batteries with great autonomy and duration is one of the great challenges that still lies ahead for the automotive industry. Despite the fact that price continues to be the main factor that drivers point out that turns them back when considering the purchase of an electric car, the lack of necessary autonomy is the other reason that most influences their decision.
This is clear from the results of a recent study published by the Cetelem Observatory where more than half of those surveyed seek a range of more than 300 kilometers. A figure that is still far from the number of kilometers with which you can drive with a tank of an internal combustion engine car.
However, a Chinese manufacturer of batteries for electric cars is willing to challenge the range of combustion engine cars with a major announcement. Gotion High-Tech reported a few days ago that in 2024 it will begin mass production of a new battery pack with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge and a longevity of 130 years.
After ten years of internal research, the Chinese manufacturer has managed to create a new battery cell called L60 LMFP Astroinno. The new battery is based on a lithium iron phosphate chemistry with added manganese which ultimately proves to be decisive in obtaining excellent numbers.
In addition to its autonomy range, the battery stands out for its high-speed charging capacity. The battery is capable of completing more than 1,500 rapid charge cycles to go from 10% to 80% charge in just 18 minutes.
Another of the virtues that the battery presents is its longevity. The data shows that it could exceed 4,000 charging cycles, which means that a vehicle with a range of 500 kilometers would easily reach two million kilometers.
Gotion High-Tech noted that the new battery is the result of ten years of internal research. New electrolyte additives and state-of-the-art technology were used to overcome previous problems with this type of battery. This new battery develops a technology called Astroinno, which allows the number of structural components to be reduced by 45% and thus lightens the weight by 32%. The battery pack wiring has also been significantly reduced from 303 meters to just 80 thanks to the innovative design.
Gotion is the most advanced LFP and LMFP specialized battery manufacturer on the market. But it is not the main producer in terms of quantity. This honor goes to CATL and BYD automobile company, which are the largest mass manufacturers.
Everything indicates that the Volkswagen ID.7 will become the first car to mount these revolutionary batteries when they go on the market next year. The German company is the largest shareholder of Gotion since 2020 when it invested 1,200 million dollars a year in exchange for having the exclusivity of its advances.
