Inditex redoubles its commitment to Zaragoza with a second large logistics center for Zara

Zaragoza is consolidated as a key piece of Inditex’s logistics machinery. To the largest distribution center that the Galician firm built in the Aragonese capital two decades ago, focused on Zara Women’s products, in just over a year a new large logistics center of 286,000 square meters will be added that will be able to use up to 1,500 workers and which, according to the Government of Aragon, will involve a total investment of between 600 and 700 million euros.

The news was announced by Inditex itself during the presentation of its 2023 results, in which it achieved a record profit of 5,381 million euros. As detailed by its CEO, Oscar García Maceiras, the logistics expansion plan planned for 2024 and 2025 foresees an extraordinary investment program of 900 million annually to increase the company’s capabilities.

This is where Zara’s new logistics base in Zaragoza – the group’s main brand with almost 2,000 stores spread across some 200 countries – comes into play, which will be added to the four it already has in operation: three in Spain (Arteixo, in La Coruña; Meco, in Madrid; and the first in Zaragoza) and one more in Lelystad (Netherlands).

For its development, the textile multinational has reached an agreement with the Aragonese developer Montepino, which two years ago opted for the transformation of the old land of the Labor University into a large logistics center.

With the aim of adapting its design to the needs of Zara, the construction company had to present to the Executive now led by the popular Jorge Azcón a modification of the General Interest Plan of Aragon (PIGA), which has received the approval of the administration and is published today.

After a period of one month to submit allegations, the project will be approved and work will begin, meaning that the first phase of the large warehouse could be ready in a year and a half (second half of 2025) with an initial workforce of between 200 and 300. workers.

Among the initial facilities will be an office building and two large hanging clothes silos, of which the investment plan includes building four more, although the launch of the entire complex will depend on market circumstances and global demand. .

“It is great news that Inditex is once again betting on Aragón,” Azcón congratulated himself when evaluating the announcement this Wednesday. The president estimated the total investment between 600 and 700 million euros, “one of the most important in recent years,” and stressed the importance for the community of once again being an “international reference” in the logistics sector. one of the pillars on which the regional economy is based.

There are several reasons why the multinational opts for the Aragonese capital. Firstly, its strategic location, with the four main Spanish cities (Madrid, Barcelona, ??Valencia and Bilbao) within a radius of 300 kilometers.

Added to this factor is a wide availability of land (with more competitive prices than other cities) and energy (thanks to the rise of renewables) and an airport that is already the third in Spain in freight transport, especially thanks to the of Zara installed 20 years ago (it accounts for more than two thirds of the cargo traffic that moves the air complex). The new warehouse “is very good news for the airport,” Azcón certified.
