Basic guide to know electronic changes

For some years now, technology has invaded the world of cycling. Potentiometers, smart lights, cycle computers, electronic changes…

The latter have meant a real change in the bicycle handling experience. The traditional mechanical changes have been left a little aside, giving way to more modern and reliable ones.

Below, we explain some of the key aspects to take into account when considering incorporating them into our bicycle.

The electronic changes do not suffer from imbalances. As it has a small motor, the movements are adjusted to the millimeter, without imbalances over time. In addition, adjusting them at the beginning is much easier, with automatic functions.

Unlike mechanical changes, they do not have the play of the lever movement. With a simple button the change mechanism is activated, turning this “click” into a process with no margin for error.

Batteries are one of the most differential components compared to a traditional transmission. Although they are capable of covering a large number of hours and kilometers, it is important to check their charge percentage to avoid problems mid-route.

By incorporating more technology, electronic changes tend to be more expensive than traditional ones. Spare parts and repairs also involve a higher cost. In any case, the price difference is getting smaller.

In relation to the last section, electronic changes are beginning to gain a large number of users. In its beginnings, this cycling innovation was intended for professional use, but recently, with the appearance of the electronic Shimano 105, it has clearly reached the general public.

The electronic ones allow some functionalities to be adapted according to the cyclist’s preferences. For example, you can adjust the smoothness of the changes, the maximum number of sprockets that are raised or lowered at once, or automatic chainring jumps from a specific sprocket.

As a final highlight, this technology allows you to connect with other devices, such as the cycle computer. From there you can check the status of the transmission battery, and even see the specific development that is being used at a specific time.

If the market follows the current trend, in a few years electronic changes will be present on the majority of bicycles. For now, however, they remain side by side with the mechanics.
