Bank delinquency rises to 3.6% in October

Delinquency in the financial sector stood at 3.6% of total credit last October, which is four hundredths more than that of September, according to data from the Bank of Spain published this Tuesday.

Delinquency in the financial sector – considering deposit institutions and financial establishments – increased again after doing so in August, when it reached 3.56%, a level it maintained in September. If compared to a year ago, non-performing loans in the financial sector decreased by 0.17 points, given that in October 2022 it was at 3.77%.

The total count of loans considered doubtful stood at 42,379 million in the tenth month of the year, 0.7% more than in the previous month, which translates into 298 million more. In an annual comparison, doubtful loans decreased by 8%, with 3,663 million less, according to Servimedia. For its part, the financed balance fell to almost 1.18 trillion, below the 1.2 trillion that it exceeded throughout 2022 and the past months of January, March, April and June. In October, it fell by 6,246 million compared to the previous month and fell by 45,806 million compared to 12 months ago.

By type of entities, in banks, savings banks and credit cooperatives, delinquency was 3.48% after dropping to 3.44% in September. Thus, this record is higher than the previous month, but is below the 3.68% of October 2022. The doubtful debts of these entities increased by 283 million compared to the previous month. On the other hand, they were reduced compared to a year ago by 3,858 million. In total, credit institutions had 39,238 million doubtful debts in the tenth month of the year.

In the case of financial establishments, delinquency rates rose again from 6.74% in September to 6.93% in October. On the other hand, the number of doubtful debts in this type of entities increased by 16 million and left the total at 2,964 million. Compared to a year ago, the amount is also higher, at 208 million
