Being competitive in elite cycling is complicated. You must dedicate your life to it and there are even cases in which even that is not enough. However, on very few occasions, there are some capable of working “miracles” like the one that took place in the Spanish Road Championship last weekend.
Gorka Sorarrain, an engineer by profession, managed to rub shoulders with figures from the international peloton and finish fifth in one of the most important events on the Spanish cycling calendar. The Basque cyclist prepared conscientiously for the time trial and although he was not very successful on the “goat”, he gave an outstanding performance on the road that could open the doors of professional cycling for him.
The revelation of these Spanish Championships is 27 years old, he is a native of the Basque Country and works as an electronic engineer. He got into this cycling thing during the pandemic, with a 500-euro bike and a roller he was hooked beyond power. Before pedaling, his sporting life had focused on basketball, but now cycling is the discipline to which he dedicates half of his days.
Perhaps that can stop being the case shortly and be able to dedicate full time to your new passion. The reality is that the results speak for themselves and he hopes that they will help him “to continue taking steps.” Being just 12 seconds away from being the Spanish champion and doing it behind four World Tour riders is more than a start.
