Alejandro Valverde has always been a special cyclist. ‘El Bala’ had an identity charisma both on and off the bike throughout his professional career. Now that he is retired, he continues to exude personality from every pore and his characteristic attitude is still completely intact.

In a preview of the fourth season of ‘El Día Menos Pensado’, Valverde’s words have surprised many. The former world champion has assured that there was something he never deprived himself of during his time as a professional: beer.

In a time where the habits of cyclists are controlled to the millimeter, Valverde’s confession is, to say the least, unexpected. “Two beers a day. I’ve taken them off at times, but my performance was the same and I didn’t lose any more weight, so… Why am I going to take them off?” Said the legendary Movistar runner.

Perhaps the greatness of the Murcian resided in things like this, showing that in a sport as mental as cycling, having good legs is just as important as feeling good about yourself. For Valverde, beer was part of his routine and depriving himself of it might have benefited him physically, but as he states, it did not translate into improved results. For this reason ‘El Bala’ maintained the most atypical “recovery” of the peloton.
