The number of women victims of gender violence, in cases with precautionary measures or protection orders, increased by 12.1% in 2023, up to 36,582, the largest year-on-year increase recorded in the last twelve years, according to information made public. this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The number of victims, the highest since the INE began this statistical series in 2011, has grown in eight of the last ten years, but it has never done so in such a pronounced way, largely reflecting the increase in complaints.
Since the year of confinement, when the number of victims decreased sharply, more than 8%, the number of abused women has been increasing, rising 3.2% in 2021, 8.3% in 2022 and 12.1% in 2023. In 2023, 36,434 men were reported, 9.7% more than the previous year. Of the total number of female victims, 19,314 were wives, girlfriends or de facto partners of the aggressor.

The relationship was already broken in 16,915 cases, while 353 women were in the process of separation. Almost half of them (47.8%) were between 30 and 44 years old, a similar age to that of the men reported.
